Enterprise users have been adopting new technologies and applications at a rapid rate. In many cases, this is done without involving IT.

These applications include everything from cloud computing to software-as-a-service, to traditionally consumer/personal applications used for a combination of business and personal purposes. Furthermore,  more and more applications are hosted outside the enterprise, and more and more users are working from remote sites.  In effect, enterprises are becoming more virtual.
